A From The Better Business Bureau.

InMotion is a highly evolving company that was started in 2001. A lot of webmasters use them, but what are they saying about them? You may have noticed them in the last couple of years. They are becoming quite popular amongst webmasters. They have accumulated a number of awards over the last 10 years from tbwhs.com and other web hosting review sites. I boast about their business class hosting, dedicated servers, VPS, excellent customer service, etc. InMotion proudly displays their A+ Better Business Bureau rating and a perfect rating from CNET, which shows they can be trusted and can simply deliver a great service for your website’s needs.
With every company that I review I like to give you a full analysis of what you’re actually getting with their service. I like to review companies on a number of vital factors so you can get a full understanding of what they have to offer. After reading this review you’ll have a clear understanding of the prices and plans they offer, performance, uptime, and customer service. In this full InMotion review I will highlight why I highly recommend and praise their business.
InMotion offers a number of web hosting plans to choose from. No matter if your running a small local site or a full blown commercial sized site InMotion has got you covered. At this time I currently have 2 VPS servers with them and recommend them to all my clients. They are certainly my #1 rated hosting company and I will provide various reasons on why I love them. Below I will discuss the four kinds of plans you can purchase with InMotion. They are shared, VPS, reseller, and dedicated.
InMotion Shared Hosting
Their shared hosting plans are actually called “business plans”. So, upon arriving at their website if you’re considering a shared plan don’t be alarmed if you can’t find it because it’s just named a “business plan”. So now that we got that out of the way I will show you the three plans they’re offering.
InMotion Business Class Hosting
This is what I like to call a beefed up shared hosting package. I consider this to be a “high end shared plan” because it actually performs like a VPS server. You can either get the “Launch” ($5.95/per month), “Power” ($7.95/month), or the “Pro” ($13.95/month). These are great because they all come with “Max Speed Zone Enabled”, full website builders, FTP, the whole nine yards. I actually used to use the “Business Class Hosting” on a number of my websites before upgrading to VPS and dedicated servers with InMotion.
I have experienced web traffic of 300 unique hits a day without any problems or issues with InMotion.
While I am on the topic of transfers; think of the money or time it cost to have a web designer move all your data for you. If you are like me you are sweating bullets hoping that you don’t make one tiny mistake and completely mess up your websites. You can trust that InMotion’s team will handle all of your transfer needs. They have moved hundreds of websites for me in the past. Never has anything went wrong and they usually migrate your data within 24-38 hours. Whenever I make big changes and transfer services I usually do it on the weekends (Friday night) so that I don’t have any downtime and everything is always running by Monday morning.
InMotion VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting
This is what most intermediate to advanced webmasters will use. This is a great option if you’re experiencing over 400 visitors each day. You have the option from choosing from three different plans which are fully managed and provide you with root access to your servers configurations. The VPS plans offered at InMotion are the “VPS-1000” ($29.99/month), “VPS-2000” ($49.95/month), and the “VPS-3000”, ($74.99/month). These prices are reasonably priced compared to other web hosting companies. The good thing about InMotion is they are always upgrading their servers with new hardware with the latest and greatest so you are always up there with the latest technology. One thing I do want to make a note of with there VPS packages is you’re going to receive cPanel installed on your server for free. Other companies will charge you a monthly fee for this.
I have tried and tested InMotion’s VPS servers and they perform much like a dedicated server.
InMotion Reseller Hosting
InMotion does offer three reseller plans which are reasonably priced. These are excellent if you have a large number of clients sites you’re maintaining. You can easily setup a reseller account and keep tabs on your clients with InMotion. The first one is “R-1000″ which is 13.99/month. The second one is R-2000 which is 19.99/month. The third one is R-3000” which is 27.49/month.
InMotion Dedicated Hosting
If you’re running a large enterprise type site and need lots of bandwidth and storage a dedicated plan is your best bet. A dedicated server will ensure that your data is kept safe on the highest level while performing at maximum speed. You have access to root access for configuring your server. InMotion gives you cPanel for free. There prices for there dedicated servers are as follows:
- “Elite” ($219.99/month)
Designing big corporate websites that get an absolute ton of traffic is a big gamble for a lot of webmasters. You need a web host that you can trust and since your clients are high dollar clients you don’t need to be making excuses for poor performance and uptime. If you’re interested in commercial level plans InMotion has that too. Their first one is “Commercial #1 for $469.99/month and the second one is “Commercial 2 which is $569.99/month.
InMotion hosting does use cPanel so you can trust that you won’t be using an in-house control panel which a lot of other web hosting companies provide. For me and a lot of other webmasters cPanel is our preferred control panel. It’s very easy to upgrade and InMotion can customize your applications to your liking. Recently, I had PHP 5 installed on my server. I needed to have PHP 5.4 on my server to run a WordPress plugin. I contacted InMotion’s customer support team and they installed a switcher on the control panel.
You can easily install Softaculous on your control panel. This makes setting up WordPress (see BoldGrid review), PrestaShop, Drupal, Joomla, AbanteCart, phpBB, SMF, WHMCS, Magento, MyBB, or any of the other PHP scripts a breeze. You can upgrade and downgrade your scripts in your installer anytime you like. In fact, I have setup a number of website up with WordPress, and used Softaculous to easily install the WordPress files onto your server. Really, the sky is the limit for scripts that InMotion supports. They do have a number of helpful articles and how-tos which show you how to do anything you could possibly imagine.
InMotion Max Speed Zone Enabled
InMotion has one key thing most web hosting companies don’t have. This is a unique service that is included in all there packages. It’s a huge selling point that I think a lot of people seem to overlook. InMotion has an extensive amount of technical knowledge that understand that our sites loading time is very important to providing the user a great experience (on our sites). Without getting to technical about SEO on you, just know that Google heavily factors the websites loading time in to where you rank. Moreover, when you are located in Houston, Texas and run a local home remodeling service it’s advantageous to have your datacenter located in the midwest.
SSD – On All Plans
As if having the ability to choose where your server is located isn’t enough; they now come with SSD. A lot of hosting companies have been switching to these drives. They are so much more effective than the older mechanical hard drive. If you are running a large site, ecommerce, blog, etc. you can typically expect slower loading times as your website grows. Meaning that peek times you’re getting more traffic your website will naturally run slower. Spinning hard drives have two major problems. First, is the rotational latency of the disk. Secondly, is the time it takes to read/write head to find the data on your hard drive. InMotion has tested their SSD drives and found that it takes 20 times longer to access data with regular spinning drives.
I really see the hosting industry going this way. One feature that I really like about InMotion is they are now using SSD on all of the hosting plans they offer. This means that instead of using a standard HDD you can reap the benefits of SSD which performs so much better than the old regular spinning hard drive.
Register Domain Names
You can purchase domain names with InMotion. You can purchase .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz, or .info with them. They don’t offer as big of a variety of domain extensions as some registrars, but you could always purchase your domain names with another registrar and then host them with InMotion.
The price tag for registering a domain name is always a little bit more expensive than other hosting companies. It cost $14.99/year. However, if you elect to sign up with a 12 or 24 months plan you do get a domain name free. You can make your domain name private so that your WHOIS information is hidden. There is a fee for this; it cost $9.99 year.
I know my reviews are rather lengthy and hopefully you haven’t fallen asleep on me, after reading about their features. Now, that we know all the features they offer let’s take a look at their uptime, performance, and customer support. Then at the end of this InMotion review I will write up a short summary about them. You can then decide whether or not they will be a suitable company for your hosting needs.
InMotion Uptime & Performance
Believe it or not one of the biggest complaints amongst webmasters is downtime. There is nothing more frustrating than having to stop doing whatever you’re doing, call the web host, and find out what the problem is. Ask any webmaster and they will tell you if their site is down more than hour a week; they will pack up and leave to a dependable host.
A lot of web hosting companies I have reviewed will try to tell you their servers will be up 99.9% of the time. This is all well and good, but when you sign up with some companies you will soon find out that it isn’t true. However, InMotion is different because they actually back up what is proudly displayed on their website. They guarantee your site will be up 99.9% of the time.
InMotion is as close to a sure thing as you can get though. Meaning that their uptime is amazing. I have used them for 6+ years and I really can’t recall a time when my server was down. I am sure it might have been down whenever they were performing server maintenance or something. I didn’t ever notice though.
As you can see InMotion servers have been monitored since November of 2005 and they been up 99.889% Currently, at uptime.besthostratings.com they monitor 4 sites websites that are using InMotion’s servers. I am not surprised the least bit when I saw that their servers have been up 100% for an entire year straight! Here is a screenshot to prove these numbers:
One thing I absolutely love about InMotion is their performance. Years ago when I used to use other web hosting companies I had no clue that my performance issues from their servers were the prime reason on why my websites were running slow. I just figured that all server speeds were the same. Without getting to technical on you I am just going to sum it up by saying InMotion uses state of the art hardware and they constantly monitor their data centers to ensure that their users getting the best possible performance. Really, when I first signed up with them six years ago I was blown away. The years before that I really didn’t realize what I was missing until I gave them a shot. Instead up waiting on each page to load it was almost instant.
I have switched a number of my sites to InMotion. People are always surprised at just how fast their websites now load. Since they are using SSD hard drives and Max Speed Zone Enabled you can expect that their servers really do deliver. Meaning you’re going to get the fastest responses time possible. I like to check every host I reviews response time. As a general rule of thumb response time is measured in milliseconds. The lower the better obviously. Well, I consider under 20 ms to be fast. I consider the the 21-50 ms average. If it takes longer than 51 ms for the server to respond I consider it pokey or slow. I have tested InMotion’s servers at at isitdownrightnow.com. You can see from the screenshot above that their response time is 4.12 ms.
As you can see from the graph below their servers were checked 10 times in 2 days, This gives us an understanding of how stable their servers are. They ranged from 4.9 ms to 4.09 ms. Meaning, there isn’t a huge spike where their servers take longer to load. A lot of other web hosting companies will jump all over the place. Meaning, that your server could be running super speedy at one second and the next it will be running extremely slow.
InMotion Customer Support
InMotion’s customer service has far exceeded my expectations. Their agents have to go through lengthy training and they don’t outsource them overseas or anything. A lot of companies will try to save money by doing this. It’s really a big flaw in their business model whenever I see a host that is hosting support to South Asia or somewhere. Not that I have had to contact them much because everything runs flawlessly 99.99% of the time. There are a number of different ways you can get ahold of InMotion. The first is by contacting them through their 24/7 toll free telephone number. Next, you can contact them through a support ticket or email. It usually takes 2-10 hours to hear back from them. Lastly, my preferred method is to contact them through live chat. This means of communication is the easiest and the best way I like to contact them. You are going to be connected with an agent in 1-2 minutes. They are super fast at answering your questions and actually have the best technical advice out of any host I have checked.
They did a have a “deface” attack 2 years ago where oversees hackers highjacked their server and changed all of the homepages to something like “hacked by such and such”. InMotion took care of it right away by replacing my index file with one that was created 12 hours ago. No data loss or anything other than about 20 minutes where InMotion found the resolution to the problem, quickly. It’s a breeze and they really do an excellent job at making sure you are taken care of. No complaints or issues with their customer support. In fact, I rate them 5 out 5 on customer support.
InMotion is the best web hosting service, handsdown. They’re an employee owned and operated business completely based in house and in the US. They are my number 1 rated company. As you can clearly see I am absolutely in love with InMotion’s service at tbwhs.com and so many other sites I run all call InMotion their home. I use them on this very site you’re reading.
I have been doing business with them for 6 years now. Never once had any extended amount of downtime, performance issues, or problems with customer support. If you are unhappy with your current web hosting provider I highly encourage you to switch to InMotion; they make it painless and easy! To get a FREE domain click here and get started today. In January of 2015 I figured I would start a new section for InMotion. I wanted to start this section so that you could see what other sites were saying about them. True, you already know that I use them and trust them with all my business needs. I have been using them for 6+ years now. However, to backup everything I have said on tbwhs.com about InMotion I will provide you with a ton of information I have found on their company.
I do extensive research here at tbwhs.com and will show you everything I can find on their company. This means the good, bad, and everything in-between. I have created tabs below this text which shows the positive, negative, and neutral information I have found on InMotion. After reading through these you will have a better understanding on what others are saying about their experience working with InMotion hosting.
This part of my InMotion review is tailored towards interviewing different webmasters to see what their experiences with InMotion have been like. I really believe that a 1 on 1 interview is the best way to get feedback about any host. The interviews were conducted down below through email. Whenever I do an interview I try to research the interviewee so I can tailor a series of questions to them. I am always looking for people to interview on all hosting companies I review. If you are interested in doing an interview with me you should contact me. However, if you want you can always reach me on Twitter @tbwhs.
