Plans: Shared, VPS, and Dedicated.
Summary: 1&1 is an average host at best. They are hit and miss with reliability. Their customer support is lacking so I can’t recommend them. They have some issues they need to iron out. These 1and1 hosting reviews will shed some light on why they are rated poorly.

1and1.com is a host that was founded in 1988. They are certainly a huge name in the web hosting industry. As big as GoDaddy and JustHost. They are sometimes called 1and1 or 1&1. It’s the same company no matter how you want to look at it, though.
You may have seen their commercials on T.V. showing you how simple it is to create a website.
With over 2,000 employees, this is one of the largest hosts. Technically, they should be able to handle everything you could need for starting a website. This company also offers mail hosting, eShops, Microsoft Sharepoint, and domain registration.
In this 1and1 hosting review I am going to look at their features. This includes their plans. Then uptime. Next performance. Then, customer support. Lastly a summary of 1and1.
1and1 offers a plethora of plans. These range from shared, WordPress, VPS, dedicated, and even cloud hosting. All their packages either come with Windows or Linux.
1and1 offers three hosting packages for shared hosting. Can use a Window or Linux operating system. Prices down below are a yearly contract.
- Basic. $0.99/month. Supports one website. Supports 20 databases. 600 MB of RAM. Unlimited space and bandwidth.
- Unlimited. $4.99/month. Supports unlimited website. Supports unlimited databases. 1.2 GB of RAM. Unlimited space and bandwidth.
- Advanced. $8.99/month. Supports unlimited website. Supports unlimited databases. 2 GB of RAM. Unlimited space and bandwidth. Comes with “SiteLock Basic” and a CDN with Railgun.
Prices Go Up
The prices are a yearly contract. Can also sign a 2 or 3-year contract. However, with your next billing cycle, the prices goes up more. Basic is then $7.99/month. Unlimited is then $9.99/month. Advanced is $14.99/month.
Unlimited Space and Bandwidth Explained
All of 1and1’s shared plans use the unlimited sales pitch except the basic plan. Contacted 1and1 to see if they could explain this “unlimited hosting” thing to me. Could not believe the response I got. First, they provided me a link to their shared hosting page. But, they forgot to include the link. Asked them to include the link. They did provide me a link. Referred to me as “David Urrea.” That is not my name. I am Garen Arnold. Told them they did not answer my question. Told me shared hosting is “already unlimited.” Here is a screenshot of our emails:
A lot of hosts will be able to tell you the inode limit. If there is no inode limit they can tell you what percentage of their CPU or RAM you can use. 1and1 was never able to provide this information to me.
For VPS you can choose from “Virtual Server L” ($29.99/month), Virtual Server XL ($34.99/month), and Virtual Server XXL ($49.99/month). These are very cheap, and other companies will start with their low-end servers at $40-50 per month)
Dedicated packages are offer as follows; Dedicated L ($59.99/month), Dedicated XL ($119.99/month), and Dedicated XXL ($399.99/month). I should note that it’s unbelievable to find a dedicated package for $60 per month. Other companies can’t offer dedicated servers at this low monthly rate. For instance, InMotion’s beginner dedicated plan is $120/month). That is half the price!
1&1 will also allow you to purchase cloud hosting. You simply pay for the resources you use each month. This can be a practical solution for a lot of webmasters. Their plans can range from $19.99.month to $676.80/month.
The prices based on cloud are as followed:
- CPU (vCores) $0.02per hour
- RAM $0.62per hour
- Hard Disk Space $0.16per hour
- Operating SystemLinux $0.00per hour (free)
**Obviously, this price could be very flexible depending on whether or not you use 1 Core CPU or 8 Core CPU’s, RAM, and various hard drive space.
1and1 uses Parallels® Plesk Panel 11 which is good for managing your backend server settings. However, unlike a lot of other web hosting companies you can’t try it on a demo site to see how it functions. I wish 1and1 would allow users to view the control panel before signing up for their service. It has plenty of script support, with a good WordPress installer. Parallels® Plesk Panel 11 is offered with all of their web hosting packages. You’re allowed full root access with every package except for their shared plans. They’re certainly a feature-rich web hosting company with lots and lots of cool tools. You can purchase a domain name, start an eCommerce shop, premium website builders, special email hosting, search engine marketing, etc.
But, here is the kicker; is 1and1 worth the time and money?
1&1 Uptime and Reliability
1and1 is a somewhat reliable company. Obviously, since they are such a big company your not going to have to deal with them taking your money and running, but be sure to read my “customer support” section to see what people are stating about their billing practices. But, you want to know about their uptime and reliability, so I am going to give you the cold hard facts. I say “somewhat reliable” because users are reporting either good or bad; there seem to be no “just ok” experiences, it’s simply good when things are running smoothly, and hell when things are not.
Here are some of the known problems with uptime and reliability:
- e-mails were bouncing back.
- Disabling sites immediately after billing issues (reporting to debt collectors).
- Wonky servers that remove your data when updating your websites.
- Can’t cancel monthly service.
- Don’t honor money-back guarantees.
- Don’t always honor their uptime guarantees.
Here is an interesting video I found on 1and1. It basically shows how their “shady” billing practices work. It’s no surprise to me that most of the complaints on the BBB are billing issues. This gives you an understanding on why they have so many billing issues!
The servers at 1and1 are fast enough, but not super speedy. I have worked with some sites with 1and1, and while the speed wasn’t blazing fast it wasn’t horribly bad, and stuff did seem to work alright most of the time.
It Gets Worse Though
I got a comment from a reader that didn’t feel that my 1and1 response time was accurate. So on December 24, 2014, I decided to check them again. To my surprise, their response time is getting slower and slower. The screenshot down below shows what their response time was like at isitdownrightnow.com:
What is more shocking is the fact that their servers seem to be unstable. Meaning at times their servers will respond at 287.13 ms, while at other times they respond in 416.44 ms. This is far too long! Why are they having so much trouble with stability? This is just one of the problems I have with 1and1. They are a massive company and should have state of the art technology. There is no reason it should be this high. See the screenshot down below:
1and1 Customer Support
How good is 1and1’s customer support? Not very good. And, I will explain why.
Support is available 24/7.
- You can contact 1and1 the following ways:
- Support ticket.
1and1 does have a “help center” which has answers to the following categories of questions:
- Account & Billing.
- E-mail & Office.
- Online Marketing.
- SSL Certificates.
Problem With Customer Support
There is no “live chat” feature. Most hosts have integrated this into their business model. 1and1 is one of the few hosts that has not.
Support is outsourced. I believe support is outsourced overseas. Probably India. When you call them on the phone, they are nice. But, there seems to be a language barrier. Do not like hosts that save money by outsourcing their support.
To give you an idea of support look at this site by Simon Jones. He recorded his calls to 1and1. Waiting times can be 15+ minutes. Sometimes you get transferred from agent to agent. Never seem to talk to the same agent twice.
Lots of Negative Feedback On Support With 1and1.com
Research shows that many sites have reviews on 1and1. There is a lot of negative feedback on support. My 1and1 hosting reviews can attest to this, too. My experience with support has not been good, either. Support tickets are responded to in 8-12 hours, but the quality of replies is lacking. I found myself repeating stuff over and over again. Also, you sometimes get cut and pasted answers. Or just canned replies.
Now, remember when I stated that they had over a thousand complaints on the Better Business Bureau. Most of them are billing-related complaints. Just to show you that I’m not making this up I have provided a screenshot of all the complaints against this web hosting company.
Clearly, there are a lot of issues and problems that need to be addressed. When people are tired, upset, and feel they have been mistreated they tend to go to the Better Business Bureau and leave a nasty complaint. I just wish 1and1 would do a better job at addressing their unhappy customers before people getting sick and tired of them. I have talked to a lot of people about them on Twitter and through email and it seems to be an overwhelmingly bad feedback for this company.
Now, to not be too harsh on 1and1, they do have happy customers as well. I have provided you with the dirt on their name, but some webmasters have been using their service for 5-10 years and wouldn’t ever consider migrating to a new web hosting company. I fully understand this. For example, I am a loyal Apple user and if someone came along and told me Apple was a horribly overpriced company and I should consider using Windows I would have to disagree with them strongly.
1and1 Hosting Reviews Summary
1and1 is a company you should avoid because of their horrible customer support. If you don’t believe me, just check with the Better Business Bureau! They have an ever growing amount of dirt on their companies name. Not only that, they don’t bother responding to complaints which show that they A don’t care or B have way to many clients that they don’t know what to do with. With such poor records for customer service, you can do much better for the money. I would like to hear from an employee of 1and1 to let us know what they are doing to better their customer service. They owe it to us, and it’s a known fact that webmasters are outraged with their support.
I would recommend InMotion or WebHostingHub if you are looking for a company that is dependable and will provide you with good customer support. I would love to hear from both negative and positive feedbacks from real customers of 1and1 so that everyone can learn from it. I would prefer honest reviews that point out specific complaints/praises you have about them.
