Summary: HostForWeb is an average web hosting company. I do feel there are better options out there though. These HostForWeb reviews will show what other webmasters are saying about them.

HostForWeb, out of Equinix, Chicago, offers web hosting for all sizes of businesses. They will host, design and register your domain name, and provide reseller services, as well. HostForWeb does appeal to a lot of people because they are pretty cheap.
When I evaluate a web hosting service, you’ll find out how the cost of the services stack up against competitors. You’ll also find out the different levels of packages available, and whether or not they’re user-friendly. Some of the features of the service will be spotlighted, and you’ll find out whether or not you can expect good customer service. Finally, I let you know if you can expect your site to be up all the time.
My HostForWeb review will clearly show why I do not recommend you host your website with them. Get ready to learn what past customers are saying about them.
HostForWeb Features
HostForWeb.com offers a plethora of web hosting plans for webmasters. Currently, they offer shared, reseller, cloud, VPS, and dedicated servers. Their prices do seem to be pretty reasonable. Heck, you can even register domain names with them, as well. I am going to go over the features you get with HostForWeb down below:
Shared Plans
You only have two options for shared hosting with HostForWeb. The options are either their “Smart Plan” ($3.95/month) or their “Business Pro” ($12.95/month) plan. It’s common for a shared plan to advertise their plans as “unlimited”. For instance, right on their website it states that you get unlimited clustered web space, bandwidth, email, FTP, etc. I know all to commonly, and not from experience with HostForWeb.com, but with HostGator that once you use a certain percentage of resources your account will get suspended. I did jump on live chat, because I wanted to know how much bandwidth and storage you could use with HostForWeb.com. Please see screenshot down below:
I couldn’t ever get a answer about unlimited anything, so I will just leave it at that. I did wait for about 10 minutes and got pretty much no help at all. Hell, they didn’t even point me to their TOS page. I did that while waiting. It does state this on their TOS page (so it’s really just up to them on their policy):
But, back to the “Smart” and “Business Pro” plan. Sorry to ramble on. They both will tell you unlimited everything, but the pro plan does come with a dedicated IP, Tomcat / JSP Support, private Rapid SSL, 1 year free domain name, and site vulnerability scanning. I could see the “Business Pro” plan being of some real value if you were looking for an SSL, dedicated IP, and wanted a free domain name for year.
Reseller Plans
Next, up is their reseller plans. They actually do offer a number of different plans for resellers. 5 plans are offered in total. The prices do look pretty good and a lot of other web hosting companies will pretty much match what they offer. The prices and details are down below:
Notice how they do tell you the amount of disk space & bandwidth you can use.
Cloud Plans
HostForWeb.com does offer 3 different cloud plans. You can purchase they plans for $20-59/month. The prices and details are down below:
VPS Plans
If you’re looking for a VPS plan they do offer 4 different plans. These plans come with SSD and WHM/cPanel. The prices and details are down below:
Also, you can purchase a number of extras:
- Additional IP address $1/month.
- Fantastico De Luxe FREE
- Softaculous Auto-Installer FREE
- RvSkin cPanel Theme $5/month.
- RvSiteBuilder Tool $5/month.
- WHMCS $15/month.
- Litespeed web server $20/month.
- Tomcat / Java Installation & Support $50/month.
- SiteLock $15/month.
Dedicated Plans
However, the best thing so far about HostForWeb.com is the dedicated plans they offer. Why? Because they offer 11 different hosting plans. This means you have the option to choose from the number of cores, RAM, operating system (CentOS 6, FedoraCore 19, Windows, Debian 7x, or FreeBSD 9x), fully managed or not managed, more bandwidth, ip addresses, backups, hard drives, firewalls, etc. Here are the plans and prices they are currently offering:
Domain Names
They do offer domain names and here are the prices:
As, you can clearly see they do have a lot of features. They offer any kind of plan you might be seeking. But, now comes the steepest test for HostForWeb.com. I am going to show you their uptime, performance, and customer support. Then at the end of the evaluation I will either recommend them or point you elsewhere.
HostForWeb Uptime & Performance
Uptime
Uptime is one aspect of web hosting that is commonly overlooked. If our sites are down we freak out as webmasters. I have a lot experience working with different hosting companies and I always lose sleep over poor uptime.
Besthostratings.com has monitored their uptime since 2005. Their uptime was 99.964% This is really good. But, what is great about them is there hasn’t been any downtime for an entire year. See the screenshot down below:
I don’t have any complaints about their uptime. But, from a interview I did they had downtime for 4 days. This is completely unreliable. There was a thread on WebHostingTalk.com where people stated they had downtime, too. I can’t ever recall a time when my server was down on my server with InMotionhosting.com (my current VPS provider).
Performance
I like to use isitdownrightnow.com to test their server response time. It’s a great tool for monitoring site uptime, but also gives a readout of their server response time. From the information I have pulled it looks like their server response time is 56.68 ms. I have tested a lot of other host and their response time was far lower than HostForWeb.com’s. This isn’t horribly slow, but isn’t anything that I am really all that excited about.
HostForWeb Customer Service
There are number of ways to get a hold of HostForWeb if you have questions or problems. You can contact them through “live chat”, toll free numbers (both international and local), lots of support forums, support ticket, and email. They are available for contact 24/7. This part I do like. A lot of other host have business hours.
From my brief experience with their support I didn’t find they helped me very much with my question. They didn’t even bother to respond to my second question. But, this doesn’t mean you should completely disregard their customer support. They do have 3 levels of support which I found out my conducting an email interview with one of their clients.
However, some webmasters state that their customer support is very helpful. It’s a little bit of gray area for me so I am going to rate them a 3 out 5.
HostForWeb Summary
There are just to many questions I have about HostForWeb.com. I don’t like how they won’t tell you the “unlimited” bandwidth questions I had. Uptime is generally ok, but they do have some complaints on that area too. Performance, could be improved upon. I do like the SSD hosting for VPS servers, but this isn’t enough for me.
So, am I stating HostForWeb.com is a horrible host? No. I actually rate them as average, but I can’t recommend them at this time. Have you used HostForWeb? Do you want to share your experience with us about them? Please leave your comments down below.
However, you are in luck if you’re seeking high quality web hosting. Go with InMotion Hosting or WebHostingHub.com. I have done business with them for years and recommend them over HostForWeb.
In January of 2015 I started a special section for HostForWeb.com. I want to provide you with some information I have found on their company. This gives us a better understanding of what others are saying about their experience working with them. I do like to show you my research to show why I do not recommend you do business with them.
So, I have categorized a number of articles I have read on them into three different sections. The following sections are positive, negative, and neutral. Please feel free to take a look at my summaries of articles I have found on them. I will update these as I see fit.
This special interview section for HostForWeb is dedicated to my email interviews with webmasters that have used their services. I get comments all the time from webmasters that have used them; I like to send them an email to see if they wouldn’t mind doing an interview. If you would like to answer some questions about HostForWeb.com please contact me or contact me on Twitter. I can then send you over some questions where you can participate; I will then post the content on tbwhs.com.
What better way to get a better understanding of HostForWeb. I do interviews with webmasters. These webmasters have been nice enough to take the time out of their day to answer some questions I had for them about HostForWeb.com. The replies I get are amazing! I conducted an email interview and then posted the interview up on tbwhs.com. If you would like to do an email interview with me please contact me or you can always reach me on Twitter.
