InMotion Hosting was started in 2001.  The main office is in Los Angeles, California.  They have another headquarter in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  They were one of the first “green” hosting companies.  InMotion is employee owned.

Here we will look at their features and price.  Next, I will check their speed.  Then, I will look at uptime.  Next, their customer support.  Lastly, I will write a summary.

InMotion Hosting Features

InMotion Hosting offers lots of plans.  They have a ton of features.  No matter if you have a big or small site, they can support you.  Now, let’s look at the plans InMotion Hosting offers.

Shared Plans

Inmotion Hosting has three shared plans.  These are called “Business” plans.  Here are more details:

• Launch. ($7.99/per month).  Supports two sites.  Unlimited bandwidth.  Unlimited Space.
• Power. ($9.99/month).  Supports six sites.  Unlimited bandwidth.  Unlimited Space.
• Pro ($15.99/month).  Supports unlimited sites.  Unlimited bandwidth.  Unlimited Space.

Resource Usage

They monitor their servers for high resource usage.  I asked Kenneth B. about this on live chat.  He told me this.

Those limits are constantly changing in a shared hosting environment.  They are not hard set.  So, I cannot provide the exact specifics.  Currently issues vary between users. Most shared customers that do upgrade do so because they require dedicated resources.  They no longer want a shared hosting environment. They want to improve their sites speed and responsiveness.

VPS Plans

InMotion does offer 3 VPS plans.  Here are the details:

Picking Your Servers Location

Select your servers location.  All InMotion plans allow you to select your servers location.  Called “Max Speed Zone Enabled.”  They have two data centers in the United States.  One in Los Angeles.  One is Washington, DC.  This can help your website’s loading time because your server is closer.

Free Transfers

Moving sites over from host to host is a hassle.  They have a team that is experts in site migrations.  InMotion does do free transfers.  

cPanel

InMotion does use cPanel.  It is easy to use.  A lot of site owners prefer cPanel over an in-house control panel.  You can setup webmail, email settings, FTP login, DNS, logs, domains, and subdomains.  It is easy to install scripts with Softaculous like:

• WordPress.
• AbanteCart.
• PrestaShop.
• Joomla.
• phpBB.
• SMF.
• WHMCS.
• MyBB.
• Dolphin.
• Open Real Estate.
• YetiForce.

WordPress Theme

InMotion has developed a WordPress theme.  The name of the theme is BoldGrid.  The theme is easy to use. Even new site owners can use it.  The learning curve is little.  Do not have to know any HTML or coding to use it.   

Domain Names

InMotion does give you a free domain name.  Need to have a 12 or 24-month contract.  Domains are on the high end.  If you buy them with InMotion, they are $14.99/year.  Domain privacy is $9.99/year.  Cost $24.98/year.  I use NameCheap because they are cheaper than InMotion.

Money-Back Guarantee

InMotion does have a money-back guarantee.  It is for 90 days and after that it’s pro-rated.  Other companies like SiteGround (30 days).  1and1 (30 days).  And Fatcow (30 days) have much lower guarantees.  However, their dedicated plans are only for 30 days.

InMotion Uptime & Performance

Uptime

Uptime is solid with InMotion. Have a status update page on their site.  This shows the status of their servers. Problems can be seen here.

Research shows InMotion has high uptime. Various sites monitored their uptime. HostingFacts.com reported 99.96% uptime. Uptime has been tracked for over 12 months. HostBenchMarker.com has stated their average uptime is 99.96%. BestHostRatings.com has tracked them for 11 years. InMotion averages 99.906 % uptime.

Performance

InMotion does use SSD hard drives. These are 20X faster than standard hard drives. The industry has been moving this way for years. They do let you pick your servers locations. I pointed this out with “Max Speed Zone Enabled.” Their data centers are in the United States. Server locations are on either the west or each coast.

Speed is great. Research shows InMotion’s infrastructure is reliable. They have teamed with lots of ISPs and use peering exchanges to create fast connections.  Shivarweb.com shows that TTFB (time to first byte) was .694. They state that InMotion is one of the faster hosts. Hosting facts shows that average loading times were 525ms. They are 37% than other hosts. Other hosting review sites like WhoIsHostingThis.com and WebHostingGeeks.com state that speed is fast.

PCmag.com published an article by Molly McLaughlin.  Lots of info on technology is on this site.  Tested out Inmotion.  She wrote about her experience.     

Tells about the plans InMotion offers.  Molly writes about InMotion’s shared, VPS, and dedicated plans.   InMotion does offer a reseller plan.  Doesn’t mention that in her article.  She did decide to sign up with the “Launch” plan.  There is no option to pay monthly.   Molly paid $67.12 for a year of service.

She set up a blog with InMotion.  Tested out their website builder.  She felt it was basic.  It came with a welcome packet, though.  It was very informative and gave clear instructions.  She did prefer them over other companies like iPower, Netfirms, and JustHost.

Molly dad questions for customer support.  To activate your account, you need to talk with InMotion.  The wait time was 1 minute.  The agent was very helpful.  She emailed all the documents that Molly needed to get started.

When Molly wanted to install the Premium Web Builder she did have to contact support.  At first, she was a little “put off” by the support.  They couldn’t resolve her problem.  Later fixed her problem in a matter of hours.  She states that customer support is “excellent.”

She does recommend InMotion and rates them four out 5.  Molly states that hey are “excellent.”   She does recommend them rather than other hosts.

InMotion Hosting has rated 1.3 stars out of 5.  There are over 100 InMotion web hosting reviews.  People complain about:

• Downtime.
• InMotion does shut down servers once they reach storage quota.
• Billing issues.
• Asking to upgrade to a higher plan.
• Email issues.
• Data was lost.
• Site hacks.

Their management team has over fifteen years of experience in providing an affordable and eco-friendly website host. This web hosting provider uses wind power, utilizing the natural force of nature (as its name suggest).  GreenGeeks has proven that they have the ability to replace three times the energy used by their servers with wind power.  So if you’re going to do business with them, you’re supporting the environment.  Since I do live on earth, I do support good old mother nature.

GreenGeeks Features

With their service, you can choose from shared, VPS, or reseller plans. They also have multiple data center locations you can choose from (Chicago, Montreal, and, Singapore, and Amsterdam). GreenGeeks provides 300% green energy web hosting which means this hosting company advocates the preservation of our environment.

Shared Plans

GreenGeeks offers shared hosting starting at only $2.95/month.  Is one of the cheapest shared plans on the market, but not the cheapest.  What I do like about their shared hosting plan is you don’t have to sign a long contract if you don’t want to.  A lot of web hosting companies like A2 Hosting, you do need to sign a 12/24/36 month contract.  However, with GreenGeeks.com you can select a monthly shared plan and you’re not tied to a yearly contract.  Is great for those webmasters that are on a tight budget.

VPS Plans

They offer three different plans for VPS.  Depending on which plan you choose the price will be $39.95/month, $59.95/month, or $109.95/month.  So, if you’re a webmaster you certainly have a lot of options on what plan you can use.  Based on the memory, CPU, RAID-10 storage, transfer, and IP you can choose a plan that will best suit your needs.

Reseller Plan

GreenGeeks offer three different plans to choose from just like VPS plans.  The plans that are offered are RH-25 ($19.95/month), RH-50 ($24.95/month), and RH-80 ($34.95/month).  I should note that if you need 25-80 cPanel accounts (the number associated with each plan name), you should choose the best plan that suits your needs.

There Is A Limit

Some of the plans offered by GreenGeeks and many other web hosts are “unlimited packages” like unlimited disk space for your storage files needs, an unlimited amount of bandwidth for your site’s visitors.  These types of plans also allow for an unlimited amount of domain names and along with this unlimited amount of email accounts on one hosting plan.

Watch out for the words “unlimited” because there is always a limit (relating to bandwidth, disk space, etc.). It is more of a sales pitch than anything. Yes, I am fully aware that it is unrealistic to have an enormous site that gets well over 10,000 unique visitors per day on a regular shared hosting plan. So if you are looking for more than that, you should check out their VPS packages. A high amount of bandwidth being allocated to there shared server wouldn’t be very practical and they would ask that you, please move it.

Control Panel

GreenGeeks provides the easiest to use control panel cPanel (much like A2 Hosting) which includes easy to use script libraries that simplify things with one-click installations. This can make installing platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal a breeze with the standard control panel (or even migrating your site from another host).

If you are moving your existing website to this green hosting company its staff will provide you support to do the migration for you.

GreenGeeks Uptime and Reliability

GreenGeeks guarantees an uptime of 99.9% which is the most common uptime guarantee for website hosting providers.  Uptime is one of the most reliable features you can expect with them.  Nothing is worse for a webmaster; that constantly has to deal with downtime issues.  Obviously, you don’t want your sites to run slowly.  Nothing is more frustrating than going to a website and waiting for it to load for 20 seconds.

GreenGeeks Customer Service

If you ever have any issues with your server you can always call them on there tech support line. Or if you prefer you can talk to them on live chat or fill out a support ticket. They don’t use overseas customer support so you know that your call will answered by someone in North America and not halfway across the globe.

Jerry Low over at WebHostingSecretRevealed.net has written GreenGeeks a review.  His hosting review site is another site I feel is creditable.  Meaning he doesn’t just give thin reviews that don’t provide any value to the user.  Most of his reviews are quite long which I do like.

Jerry shows that GreenGeeks does have certificates that show GreenGeeks certificates from Booneville Environmental Foundation, which shows that they purchased “2.3 MW of clean energy back into the grid”.  He goes into detail about how the 300% green energy works.

Pros

• Obviously, they are a green web hosting company.
• They do daily backups for a small monthly fee.
• Very cheap hosting company.
• You do have the room to grow as your site expands.

Cons

• Lacking customer support.
• Domains cost $24.95.  (you do get a free domain name when signing up).
• Refund policy does not include (domain names, SSL, and CDN cost).

WHSR does rate GreenGeeks 4 out 5 stars.  Jerry says that if you can put up with the possibility that customer support might not spoon feed you, and you have the technical capabilities to handle basic hosting operations yourself they are a solid choice.  Jerry recommends GreenGeeks over a number of popular hosts.

Their reviews are easy to navigate, with a quick overview of pros and cons, along with an overall score based on a ten point scale. TopTenReviewws then offers separate scoring on each of the different features being reviewed. In this case we’re looking at what TopTenReviews.com has to say about the hosting service GreenGeeks.

Overall Score

TopTenReviews gives GreenGeeks an overall score of 8.4 out of 10. This is an excellent score and indicative of a good hosting service.

Pros

GreenGeeks does limit the number of emails you can send each hour, so if you plan to do bulk emails, this may not work for you. However, for everything else, GreenGeeks is a great host.

Overall, this article does speak very highly of GreenGeeks. They are TopTenReviews.com’s seven rated web hosting company. As mentioned above they do get an 8.4/10.
